If We Were On A Coffee Date #03 | Colorado!

Posted in travel

If we were on a coffee date this morning, I would tell you all about our trip to Durango, Colorado!

We have family there, locals who love their small town. Getting out there was bonkers — a missed flight, waiting all day in the airport, an impromptu sleepover in Dallas and finally reaching our destination, 24 hours later than planned.

But, praise the Lord, we arrived and had the best time!

We skied. There was sweat and tears, but thankfully no blood. I’ve only been skiing once, so it was almost a re-learning act for me. Let’s not talk about all the snow I ate and bruises I acquired during the first half of the day. After lunch, I finally got the hang of it, and we had a blast. Every so often I’d stop J and yell, “I want a minute to look at the view!” (Because it would have been absurd not to, the mountainscape was amazing.)

We snow shoed. I’ve never done this before, and after a full day of skiing I think my legs were a little annoyed, but it was super cool. We walked a couple miles through large trees, beautiful mountains, and blankets of snow. I was whipping out my phone almost every 5 minutes to snap another photo.

We ate. I married into a family of great cooks. We had homemade pizza, fancy biscuits, breakfast burritos, chicken chili, etc. This was a happy reality considering all of the activity we were doing.

We played. Sadly we didn’t get around to making a snowman, but we threw plenty of snow at each other. After being in south Georgia where the weather has been in the 70’s for weeks, I wanted to roll around in the snow. (I didn’t, fyi.)

Durango is a small town with a wide variety of people. It was nice to experience a little bit of the life that our siblings live, to drive around their town and meet some of their friends.

I learned something else on this trip: how well my husband loves me. He very well could have gone off and skied more challenging slopes, but he stayed with me. He would watch me ski and give me pointers. He’d laugh and tell stories and enjoy himself. He wanted to hang out with me, even if it meant going on easier slopes. We had such a great time hanging out and skiing together. And he let me stop and take whatever photos I wanted. I’m truly thankful for him.

Even with all the early stress of getting out to Durango, I was okay because we were together. Throughout our travel time, we played games, we talked and laughed, we watched movies. It’s a wonderful gift to be best friends with your spouse. It makes adventures like this 10x better.

Rachel, I have been saying the same thing to my husband, so around September we said, “Let’s finally make this happen,” and took a leap. :)
I hope you get to go soon!

What a lovely winter wonderland!! We spent Christmas 2014 in Vail, Colorado– it was so pretty and I learned how to cross-country ski (harder than it looks)!

Daisy, it took me almost 4 hours to get the hang of regular skiing. I imagine cross country skiing is a whole other animal. But I bet you rocked!
