I’d love to say that my children’s favourite Christmas activity is sitting with me making nature Christmas crafts but I always lose out to decorating the Christmas tree. Lucky for me, this year I found winner that combined both!
I set up a nature craft station and asked if any of the girls wanted to decorate a mini Christmas tree — their very own — with ornaments made from nature! Miss five was the first to bite. We decorated her Christmas tree together for over an hour.
Since then, both my other daughters have begged I set up one for them too.

How to make the mini Christmas tree
To decorate a mini Christmas tree, you don’t need a tutorial. It’s all up to you and your child’s creativity. We decorated our tree with nature, naturally! *grin* If you want to make something similar, check out the steps below.
How to decorate a mini Christmas tree:
- Wrap the Christmas tree pot with paper bark. If you can’t find paper bark, it still looks amazing wrapped with leaves or long grass. Use the red string to secure it.
- Hole punch some leaves and use this mini hole punch to put a small hole in the leaf shape. Thread the string through this hole and tie it on the tree. Do this a few times. Use a star hole punch, Christmas tree hole punch or circle hole punch.
- Tie the pods, nuts and other natural materials onto the tree with the red string.
- You can make tinsel-type tree wrap using braided grass too.
There’s nothing quite like getting to decorate a mini Christmas tree. I could tell my girls felt very special having their own live tree to decorate and care for. It might be mini but I think it’s much prettier than our plastic one!
