We notice eyes.
As babies, we connect with our mother’s eyes first. Then we noticed other people’s eyes; blue eyes, green eyes, brown eyes. Even doll makers knew the lure of big eyes.
So, if you’re planning a Halloween display and you really want to grab attention, make these truly terrifying leaf eyeballs.
There’s nothing spookier than scary eyes!
Why leaves? Well, there’s plenty around this time of year and it’s more eco-friendly than the plastic crafts, or decorations in the shops.
What you need to make leaf eyeballs
- Lots of big beautiful leaves
- Acrylic paint (white, red, black and green).
- Paint brushes
How to make leaf eyeballs
Check out the video below:
- Collect some big beautiful leaves outside with the kids.
- Clean your leaves with a cloth.
- Paint the corners of your eyeballs first, then the black pupil.
- Next, use the a paint brush with stiff bristles to flick little bit of paint inward from the whites of the eyes (in the iris of the eye). Do the same, but flick out from the pupil. All the hard bristles of the brush form little lines coming in around the eye.
- Last, and the most important, is to put a couple of white dots near eye’s pupil. This makes your eyes pop and look life-like.
- If your white paint is dry around the corners, you can now add little red veins to make your leaf eyeballs really spooky.
- Why not make leaf ghosts and leaf zombies too!
Experiment with different leaves
You can make so many unique leaf eyeballs by experimenting with leaves of different shape, colour and size. Also try different paint colors and different shaped pupils. The kids will have so much fun making their own versions.
Once your leaf eyeballs are dry, it’s time to blue tack them onto a wall or hang them up as a garland.
My girls really enjoyed making funny faces with them, both with nature and taking photos of themselves with one big eyeball.
After all, eyes draw a lot of attention!
