Nature Christmas tree ornament for kids

The inspiration for this nature Christmas tree ornament came from Stars Inspirations. I couldn’t wait to replicate Marta’s sweet and simple Ribbon Christmas Tree Ornaments. I was hoping my nature materials would stand the test. I’m just waiting for a fail. Luckily, it wasn’t the case for this lovely craft.

• Long lomandra leaves or grass
• Thin sticks
• Hole punch
• Gumnuts or wooden beads
• Snowflake hole punch for the top of the tree (optional)

How to make it

1. Begin by winding the grass strand back and forth to form loops. To do this, first form one loop. Holding the loop at it’s midpoint, wind the grass underneath to form another loop that is a slightly longer length than the first. Keep going until you have no grass left.

2. If you have strong hole punch, and the grass strand is a similar thickness the whole length, you can slip the grass through the hole punch and punch a hole in the middle of the folded grass. Alternatively, you can gently squish the grass and unravel it. You should see where the grass folds are, then punch a hole evenly in the middle of each fold.

2.  Drill holes in your gumnuts (see how we drilled holes in gumnuts). Alternatively you could just use wooden beads.

3. Push a gumnut/bead through the stick. A notch in the stick held the gumnuts for ours but you could easily glue the gumnut/bead with some quality craft glue.

4. The next step can be completed in two ways:

A)  If you have a very long grass strand, you could thread three of the holes onto the stick and then add a gumnut and then again three more holes in the grass and add another gumnut and so on. The grass will go around the gumnut. Follow that pattern until there is no grass left (see the image below).

B)  The second way is if your grass threads aren’t that long (bottom tree). You can do the same but only add three folds of the grass strand then a gumnut/bead. In this process the grass doesn’t go around the gumnut.

With both options, don’t forget to space the grass and gumnuts to make them even. Finish the Christmas nature craft off with one last gumnut/bead at the top and then glue a hole punched snowflake on top.

Decorate your home

Now you can add string to your nature Christmas tree ornament and hang them on the Christmas tree or stick them around the house as pretty Christmas decor.

I just adore how these turned out. They are still green three days later but they are starting to turn a golden colour, which still looks lovely.
