Leaves.
You might be thinking you’ll have to collect a whole bunch for this craft. And you will. But think of it more like you’re going on an expedition of adventure with the kids!
I too thought I was just collecting red, green and golden leaves but I was quite wrong.
We collected memories.
I grabbed our cane basket and went out into the nature reserve at the back of our house. My twin daughters followed me and we scanned the ground and started collecting leaves.
We came across caterpillars, beetles, mushrooms and a stingless bee hive that had fallen from the tree in the latest rain downpour. They were still happy, thankfully, and we watched the little insects flitter in and out of their hive for a long quiet while.
Crafts aren’t always about the end product. It’s about the experiences we share, collecting, preparing and doing the activities together. Do enjoy the time you collect the leaves together, because it’s the most joyous part!
What you’ll need:
Leaves. Around a similar size is best.- Hoop: I used a metal neck ring (1mm) I found at the craft store however, you could use this >dream catcher hoop and cut it using wire cutters too.
- Hole punch
- Bow
- Needle and Thread (optional)
- String

I was a little excited about this particular craft so I forgot to take photos of the process. Opps! The following images are stills from the video (below) — can you tell?
- As I mentioned, you’ll need to collect a heap of leaves. If you think you have enough, collect more. I thought I had enough and ended up going outside to get more, twice!
- Place five of the leaves on top of each other and punch a hole in the middle of the leaves.
- Hole punch all the leaves you have.
- Sting half of the leaves onto your metal ring.
- Weave, tie or sew your bow onto the metal ring. It will really depend on the material you use as to how you secure it. I used hession so it was quite easy to weave through the ring and secure it. I did secure the edges with thread, only because the leaves were quite heavy and I wanted the full bow to be seen.
- String more of your leaves on the other side of your bow.
- Lastly, tie some string at the top of your ring and hang it around your home, on the front of your door, where ever you like!
A leaf wreath is a beautiful changing work of art.
