Spin your own Spider Web Nature Weave

This nature weaving activity combines creativity and the outdoors. It costs nothing and encourages children to problem solve while enjoying the textures and nature.

Spider Web Nature Weave: What you’ll need

• Lomandra plant leaves (or a similar plant that has very long thin leaves)
• A fully open fern frond (just cut one frond off, no need to kill the plant)
• A glue gun , just in case certain sections need securing (affiliate)
• other nature bits and bobs to make the spider

How to make the Spider Web Nature Weave:

1. Cut all the fern leaves off of the frond so that you have a long flexible stem to create the structure of the web.
2. Secure the fern stem into a circle by wrapping a lomandra around the two ends, or gluing it.
3. Use the more rigid bottom of a lomandra leaf to make a ring about the size of a 50 cent piece. You can also secure this with glue if you need to.
4. Tie eight lomandra leaves on to the lomandra ring, spread them out like the spokes on a  bike.
5. Put the ring in the middle of the fern stem circle and start tying the other lomandra leaf ends to the fern frond.
6. Cut the over lapping lomandra leaves down to the fern frond leaving at least 1 cm free just incase it gets loose and you need to tighten it again.
7. Tie three lomandra leaves together making one very long leaf
8. Tie one end of the long lomandra leaf onto the middle ring and then weave the leaf through the others over and under.
9. Tie it off once you get to the outside fern frond.
10. Make a spider by using nature and glue
11. Attach the spider to the web using another lomandra leaf

Miss Possum needed help with this craft but  it was really lovely to sit with her and do it together. She really enjoyed cutting the leaves off the fern frond and weaving the lomandra through the other leaf strands in the web. We love it. If you spray it with water each day, it should last up to a week!
