How did you learn to braid? Did you use your doll’s hair? Your sister’s hair? Or your own hair?
I want to introduce you to a new ‘outdoor’ way of learning how to braid. It’s a little quirky but learning to braid using grass is really fun.
If you think this is an activity only for girls, I want to convince you that boys need to learn too.
My husband can attest to that!
He didn’t know how to braid and now that he has three little girls, well, it’s kind of a requirement. So not only is it a good activity for girls but this is a great activity for boys too (and you’re more likely to get them to learning with grass than with doll’s hair – bonus!)
Braid using grass
I first thought of this activity a couple of years ago when our family went camping. Beside our camp site was some long thick grass. The girls were playing with it one day, mainly stomping on it and hiding in it, when I thought it would make a perfect tool to teach my eldest how to do a simple three strand braid. Miss Poss loved it so much that she braided the long grass all over the place.
When she came to me yesterday, wanting to learn how to do a fishtail braid, I couldn’t help remember that fun moment with the long grass. So, I went and got some more long grass for her to learn with.
I joined the grass together with plastic snap locks that usually keep your items from spoiling. For the smaller braids we joined the three strands together with a peg.
If you like this you’ll love our nature weaving frames!
She learnt the fishtail braid fairly quickly and then started making more three strand braids with the grass. It didn’t take her long to see it as a hair accessory and she ran to get some hair clips. The whole afternoon was spent playing with grass!
I didn’t expect my children would grow up learning how to braid using grass but I’m certain it will be a unique and cherished memory. I wonder what hairstyle I’ll teach her next!
