Kids LOVE nature scavenger hunts, and for a fairly simple concept, they achieve a lot.
As your child runs around finding all the different items on their list, they’re getting exercise, exploring their surroundings and connecting with nature. I decided it was worth taking this old favourite a step further by creating a list—or more specifically, a wheel!—for each of the five senses.
Because once a child starts ‘scavenging’ for a variety of different textures, or an assortment of different sounds, they’re experiencing the outdoors on a whole other level.
You’ll need:
• Sensory Nature Scavenger Hunts
• A4 Paper or card
• Scissors
• 12 wooden pegs
• Glue
Sensory Nature Scavenger Hunt Instructions:
- Print your scavenger wheels and ‘I found it’ circles on thick A4 paper or glue your printed paper onto some recycled cardboard.
- Cut out your scavenger wheels.
- Cut out your ‘I found it’ circles and stick them on to some small wooden pegs.
- Pick a wheel to start with, then go outside with your child and explore the natural world. Set up some foods outside for the taste wheel.
- When your child finds something on the scavenger wheel, show them how to add a peg to the wheel. See if they can add pegs around the whole wheel.
- If your child has completed a scavenger wheel, try another.
