My kind of masked superhero wouldn’t save the planet from bad people or street crime but they’d be right on top of big business polluters that impact negatively on the environment. Bring back Captain Planet! Do you remember him?
Any way, we decided to make nature masks yesterday and be nature heroes. The girls have enjoyed colouring with nature before. Last time we used animal templates and it was a hit, so I knew they’d love this activity too.
Make the printable Nature Masks
One of my girls wanted to use a dinosaur mask, so if your child isn’t keen on super heroes, you could try colouring in animal masks with nature instead. You can find koala, wombat, dinosaur, spider and frog masks in the printable section.
Print out the superhero masks below.

Print the mask and stick it to some cardboard using a glue stick (we recycle our cereal boxes). When it’s dry, cut it out.
The only other things you’ll need are:
- A collection of nature (leaves, sand, grass clippings, flowers, nature’s glitter)
- A good craft glue (affiliate link)
- String
- A hole punch (to tie string to the mask)
Then, let your children colour in their printable nature mask using the natural materials you’ve all collected together.
Here’s how ours turned out. I think they look absolutely spectacular!
We used sand with some of our nature craft and I didn’t even consider at the time that it could gt in my child’s eye. It didn’t but think carefully about the materials you provide you child when letting them make this nature craft.
I couldn’t help but make one for myself too.
Now that we’ve made them, it’s time to become true nature superheroes and act for nature. Tomorrow well be going out collecting rubbish in the nature reserve and pulling out some weeds. We’re so motivated to help the environment right now. A printable nature mask always helps you to feel more powerful, doesn’t it?!
Do your children love to wear super hero masks? Do they love nature craft?
haha, yes, I o remember Captain Planet. In fact, I could sing you the theme song right now, haha. Lovely nature masks! Thanks for the template! 🙂
I’m singing the theme song in my head too. I LOVED that cartoon series. I wished they’d bring a new version back (with the old theme song).
I remember Captain Planet. Ah the memories 🙂 I love the masks, the look fabulous. My kids love nature crafts and are always bringing home leaves and other treasures when we go on our walks. Now we can put all those treasures to good use. Thanks for the templates.
Captain planet was the best!
So glad you like the masks. I can;t imagine coming up with a more fitting activity for my kids. They really enjoyed this activity!
My kids love making masks – the autumn leaf one is gorgeous!
Thanks Kate. I couldn’t hep but make that leaf one Kate. I just love the autumn colours.
You have the best ideas!
Naw, thanks Sara. That’s so kind of you. I have so many ideas. I don’t think my brain will ever dry up. As soon as I go out into the bush I have another couple of brainwaves.
Very cool! Pinned and shared.
Thanks Kylie! x
Love the concept; beautifully executed! Unsure how pulling weeds is “good for the environment…”
I lam, thanks for your lovely comment about the masks. Invasive weeds are among the most serious threats to Australia’s natural environment and we have quite a few species taking hold in our nature reserve. These plants (mostly exotic) kill off many native plants that the wildlife require to live on (either for food or shelter). We generally pull out a few every time we go for a walk. It’s a never ending battle though.
Wonderful, thanks for the clarification. We’re in Canada and while invasive weeds can be an issue in some areas trying to pull them manually wouldn’t work. How do you prevent regrowth (inhibiting seed spreading or root “residue”)?
Oh Penny, I love this activity! Will definitely be cracking this one out for the school holidays! My little man is an eco warrior, superhero and mask-lover in one. Masks *definitely* make you more powerful!! xx
Naaaw, thanks Jo! If you do, make sure you post a pic for me. I’d love to see it! xx
